Which Built-In Grill is Right for You?
We offer the largest selection of built-in outdoor grills. With so many of the top grill brands to choose from, the search for the right insert may seem overwhelming. Consider which class of grill head will fit your outdoor kitchen budget best. Are you looking for a luxury grill to impress your guests or an heirloom grill that will last for generations? Check out our expert reviews for unbiased evaluations on many of our most popular built-in barbeques.
Propane vs Natural Gas
One of the first decisions you’ll likely make is what fuel type your built-in gas grill will use. Natural gas is a great option, but if an existing source is not readily available you’ll need to consult your local utility company or a licensed plumber. The cost of running a new line to your home for natural gas may be a consideration.
Propane is more readily available and can be purchased in portable tanks or stored in larger tanks on your property and refilled by a gas company. Liquid propane is heavier and burns hotter than natural gas, requiring different ventilation systems.
Don’t Ignore the Grill Accessories
While your new built-in barbeque will be the focal point of your outdoor kitchen design, you’ll want to consider some island accessories to really make your outdoor kitchen shine. From safety concerns to luxury add-ons, we’ve got you covered.
If your built-in grill will be in a covered space, you’ll need to provide adequate ventilation for your grill insert with an outdoor rated vent hood. An insulated grill jacket is necessary if placing your drop-in grill into an island constructed of combustible material like wood. Gas shut off valves and vent panels are a great layer of added protection in case of emergency. Keep in mind, you’ll need to install access doors below your grill head to access plumbing connections.
A propane tank bin can be a stylish and convenient way to hide those unsightly tanks. A great compliment to a grill insert is a matching side burner or flat top griddle. Finally, a beverage center and/or outdoor refrigerator can be the perfect finishing touch to your outdoor space.
Built-In Gas Grills FAQ
How much does a built-in grill cost?
The cost for a built-in grill will vary from under $1,000 to about $10,000. The lower models tend to be built-in ceramic kamado grills, whereas the higher ones will be top-of-the-line, stainless steel barbecue behemoths at upwards of 60 inches wide. Generally speaking, the "sweet spot" will be in the $1,500–$4,000 range (before discounts and promotions).
Can I use a regular/freestanding grill for a built-in?
In short, sometimes. On some brands, the grill head is removable from the cart. If the grill head is not removable, the manufacturer lists required clearances to structures. This is necessary for venting the grill, and to prevent gas build up within the cart.
How far should a built-in grill be from the house?
This varies extensively. The installation instructions that come with the grill will outline the required clearances to the nearest structure for. These clearances must be followed to the T for overall safety purposes.
Who makes the best built-in grill?
There is no right or wrong answer, as the best grill is going to be the one that most closely matches your lifestyle — whether it is hot and fast for a Tuesday night, or one that cooks low and slow on a weekend. Some are "all purpose", meaning they will work well for a variety of cooking styles.
